SPVS works in behalf of nature conservation
The NGO from Paraná is recognized as one of the most important in Brazil
The SPVS (Portuguese acronym for the Society for Wildlife Research and Environmental Education) has the mission "works toward the conservation of nature by protecting native areas, by carrying out environmental education programs and by developing models for the rational utilization of natural resources".
SPVS was founded in 1984 in the city of Curitiba, State of Paraná, Southern Brazil. Since then, SPVS has developed projects in several parts of the country. Today, its actuation is focused in the Araucaria Forest (a Southern Brazil biome threatened by extinction) and Guaraqueçaba region (area located in the major remnant of the also threatned Brazilian Atlantic Forest).
Original and current Atlantic Forest coverture in Brazil: less than 7% of its natural areas
Among the initiatives developed by SPVS are "carbon sequestration" and avoided deforestion projects to face global warming, environmental education actions, a project to avoid the extinction of the "papagaio-de-cara-roxa" (Red-tailed Amazon Parrot - Amazona brasiliensis ) and initiatives to help maintain the remaining areas of natural patrimony in Southern Brazil.
In order to achieve its goals, the institution counts on support of governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations and the private sector - together with SPVS develops actions to engage the attention for investments in the environmental cause as a form of adding value to its business.
