SPVS was founded in 1984 by researchers and professional people looking to create new ways of working with nature conservation, it is governed by the General Assembly, the supreme body in its hierarchical structure. The Assembly is composed of the SPVS  partners, the founders of the institution, professionals, researchers and leaders from civil society, all appointed by the partners based on important work each member has been doing for the cause of nature conservation.

The Assembly’s duties include approving the activities report and balance sheet, as well as electing members of the Deliberative and Fiscal Councils.

The Deliberative Council is responsible for discussing the goals, guidelines and performance indicators, in addition to helping develop the fundraising programs. This Council also decides on the acquisition of any fixed assets and appointing the Executive Director.

The Fiscal Council, in turn, is responsible for issuing expert opinions about the balance sheets sent by the Executive Director, giving opinions about financial operations and overseeing the fulfillment of the Institution’s Statutes.

His duty is to transmit the resolutions decided upon in the meetings of the General Assembly, the Deliberative Council and the Fiscal Council to the day-to-day operations of the institution.

SPVS is a legal entity governed by private law, constituted in the form of a not-for-profit association. It is an independent Brazilian institution that has been continuously dedicated to the development of strategies for achieving results in nature conservation, since 1984.
