Red-tailed Parrot (Amazona brasiliensis) Conservation Program

This bird species is highly endangered and its small area of occurrence is limited to the southern coast of São Paulo, the Paraná coast and the north coast of Santa Catarina State. Since 1998 this Project contributes to the conservation of the species and its habitat through education for nature conservation activities, scientific techniques and monitoring. After 13 years of continuous efforts, the census has revealed stability of the population of the Red-tailed parrot in Paraná State. This fact is a huge achievement in itself; however, in spite of that, their habitat is still endangered.

- 120 artificial nests of wood and PVC installed by the project were fundamental to the growth of the population.

- Nature Conservation Education: 1,500 Vida Livre (Life in Freedom) books distributed in public schools along the coast of Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo. At Rasa Island, the book reached every one of the approximately 300 families.
